GirlGoTravel: Female Solo Traveler Feature #9

Nicole just celebrated her 31st birthday with a trip to Puerto Rico. She disconnected, ate amazing food, hiked and got sunburned. Check out her trip and wish her a happy belated birthday!

Visiting Old San Juan was one of the “to-do’s” on my list, so I figured I might as well walk there. I wanted to be as disconnected as possible on this trip, so I didn’t have Google Maps leading me where to go.  I took a couple of screenshots of the general direction I was heading and then mostly relied on the kindness of strangers when I deviated from my route.  There was so much beautiful greenery and vegetation along the way. It was about 11 miles roundtrip, but definitely worth the trek!

During my trek, I came across a memorial for Felisa Rincon de Gautier.  I did not know who she was at the time I took the photograph, but simply thought the art was so beautiful and felt inclined to take a picture. Turns out that Dona Fela, what locals called her, was a political maverick. She was the first female mayor of San Juan and also the first woman to be elected as the mayor of a capital city in the Americas. I felt it was a serendipitous encounter to have unknowingly captured that picture on my journey.

The floor along the memorial was so bright and colourful, I couldn’t help but take a picture.

The eclectic décor in the Dreamcatcher was lovely.  All of their furniture was upcycled or refurbished.  The entire B&B always had the light scent of incense lingering in the air.

There were several mini spiritual shrines like this one at the Dreamcatcher.  I took this photograph right before I left as my “until next time” shot.

Every morning, Dreamcatcher offered yoga classes on the beach.  This was without a doubt some of my favorite experiences of my trip.  Having the opportunity to do yoga with the Atlantic Ocean as your backdrop is definitely a surreal experience. Doing yoga poses on sand adds a welcome challenge to your practice as well, which was nice. I took this photo on the morning of my birthday before the class.  I was walking along the beach, watching the sunrise and felt overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude and pride in myself for taking the time out for myself and this trip.

I signed up for an excursion to hike El Junque Rainforest through Dreamcatcher and met a lovely American couple on the tour.  It was only the three of us and our tour guide Charlito, so it was super intimate. Charlito was very kind and took us on way more trails than he was obligated to. I took this shot from the summit of El Junque. Charlito said that he had not seen the sky as clear as it was on this day in months.  It was so clear, that you could see the island of St. Thomas.  It was breathtaking.

Watchtower Castle was the first peak we reached.  This was a tower previously used by the military to scope out enemy invaders.

After we finished our hike, Charlito took us to La Coca Waterfalls, which was absolutely gorgeous. The water was refreshing after being covered in mud from climbing trails. The water was so clean and crisp. After we dried up, my hair and skin felt like silk.

On the morning of my last day, I went for a long walk to soak up the community one last time. I asked a man sitting on a bench to take this picture of me. I realized on my last day that I did not really have any pictures of myself because I was so caught up in capturing my experiences the entire time! ☺
